Ngorongoro Crater is a natural wonder, a sunken bowl of beauty and bounty that was once a towering volcano. It is the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world, measuring between 10 and 12 miles (16 and 19 km) across and having an area of 102 square miles (264 square km) 1. It is the jewel of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that covers 8,292 km 2 (3,202 sq mi) in northern Tanzania .
